From schoolwork to connecting with friends, kids use screens for all kinds of things — so it’s not realistic to forbid them altogether. But there are good reasons to be aware of how much time your child is spending on their devices. The best way for kids to learn how to safely interact  with media is for parents to do it with them. Just like reading a book together, kids learn more when you talk through what’s happening together. To help parents with this process, we partnered with Google Play to curate a list of Teacher Approved apps reviewed by our clinicians. These apps support children’s mental health and well-being— like learning how to calm down when they’re feeling angry or other big emotions — and help them practice basic academic skills in a safe and entertaining way. The Child Mind Institute’s Dr. Dave Anderson joined California First Partner and friend of CMI Jennifer Siebel Newsom in a roundtable and town hall discussion with students, parents, and educators about youth mental health and the challenges families face while navigating the ongoing crisis, moderated by journalist Lisa Ling. The event, held in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District, the California Partners Project, and the Child Mind Institute, helped kick-off Mental Health Awareness Month, closed out Youth Mental Health Awareness Week, and served as an important reminder of the state’s innovative, accessible, and inclusive strategy to support Californians’ mental health across the state. “Today’s youth and parents face a deluge of unique pressures – balancing the ubiquity of digital media and time on screens, economic and social pressures, rising environmental crises, and more. California recognizes these challenges and we’re investing in programs and services to support California families.” – First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom

Olympic silver medalist and member of the United States women's national gymnastics team, Jordan Chiles, shares mental health advice she wishes she knew as a young athlete. Hear her strategies for building a support system, advocating for your mental health, and using your inner voice as loud as you can. Jordan has been a member of the U.S. national team since 2013 — she was only 11 years old when she reached the elite level and made her first national team and international assignment in the same month when she was 12 years old. She is also contending to be one of the five gymnasts representing Team USA in Paris this summer! -- Asking for support is a key part of maintaining your #MentalHealthFitness.
